God vs Science

June 28th, 2009

God vs. Science

God vs. Science

“Let me explain the problem science has with religion.” The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand.

“You’re a Christian, aren’t you, son?”

“Yes sir,” the student says.

“So you believe in God?”

“Absolutely.”

“Is God good?”

“Sure! God’s good.”

“Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?”

“Yes.”

“Are you good or evil?”

“The Bible says I’m evil.”

The professor grins knowingly. “Aha! The Bible!” He considers for a moment. “Here’s one for you. Let’s say there’s a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?”

“Yes sir, I would.”

“So you’re good…!”

“I wouldn’t say that.”

“But why not say that? You’d help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn’t.”

The student does not answer, so the professor continues.
“He doesn’t, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer that one?”

The student remains silent.

“No, you can’t, can you?” the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax.

“Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?”

“Er..yes,” the student says.

“Is Satan good?”

The student doesn’t hesitate on this one. “No.”

“Then where does Satan come from?”

The student falters. “From God.”

“That’s right. God made Satan, didn’t he? Tell me, son.
Is there evil in this world? ”

“Yes, sir.”

“Evil’s everywhere, isn’t it” And God did make everything correct?”

“Yes.”

“So who created evil?” The professor continued, “If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil.”

Again, the student has no answer.

“Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?”

The student squirms on his feet. “Yes.”

“So who created them?”

The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question. “Who created them?”

There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.

“Tell me,” he continues onto another student. “Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?”

The student’s voice betrays him and cracks. “Yes, professor, I do.”

The old man stops pacing. “Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?”

“No sir. I’ve never seen Him.’

“Then tell us if you’ve ever heard your Jesus?”

“No, sir, I have not.”

“Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelled your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?”

“No, sir, I’m afraid I haven’t.”

“Yet you still believe in him?”

“Yes.”

“According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?”

“Nothing,” the student replies. “I only have my faith.”

“Yes, faith,” the professor repeats. “And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith.”

The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of his own. “Professor, is there such thing as heat?”

“Yes.”

“And is there such a thing as cold?”

“Yes, son, there’s cold too.”

“No sir, there isn’t.”

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested.

The room suddenly becomes very quiet.

The student begins to explain, “You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don’t have anything called ‘cold’. We can hit up to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees. Everybody or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.”

Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.

“What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?”

“Yes,” the professor replies without hesitation. “What is night if it isn’t darkness?”

“You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? That’s the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn’t. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?”

The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester. “So what point are you making, young man?”

“Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.”

The professor’s face cannot hide his surprise this time. “Flawed? Can you explain how?”

“You are working on the premise of duality,” the student explains. “You argue that there is life and then there’s death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is t o be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.

“Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?”

“If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do.”

“Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?”

The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed.

“Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?”

The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided.

“To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean.” The student looks around the room. “Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor’s brain?”

The class breaks out into laughter.

“Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor’s brain, felt the professor’s brain, touched or smelled the professor’s brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir. So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?”

Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable.

Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. “I guess you’ll have to take them on faith.”

“Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life,” the student continues. “Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?”

Now uncertain, the professor responds, “Of course, there is. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man’s inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.”

To this the student replied, “Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.”

The professor sat down.

The student was Albert Einstein. Albert Einstein did write a book titled God vs. Science in 1921.

If you read it all the way through and had a smile on your face when you finished, mail to your friends and family.

Jesus, Son of David, Have mercy on us. .

Sample Chart/Profile

February 28th, 2009

Sun in Taurus

Here is great patience, able to respond to the world and to build upon what is already there and happening. You are willing to listen to others, take cues, and then reflect and build upon that information. Others find you gentle, steady, and, for the most part, kind. You take things in and provide an environment to bring them forth. You make “fertile” your field. A ready ear.

Sun in  4th House

Home, family, and security are important to you. You love to send out roots and build a home base. Sensitive and somewhat private, you tend to be a very feeling (and sometimes vulnerable) person. You sense things and have a good feel for business.

Sun Trine Moon

You are very fortunate in being able to grow and progress throughout your life without major difficulties. You can always find the resources you require at hand plus the necessary instruction in how to use them. An inner vision, coupled with the ability to see the “Big” picture, often finds you working as a go-between with others. You could even have a special gift for spanning the generation gap, bringing older and younger spirits together. A love of animals, children, older people, and the needy and downtrodden in general, is a lifelong trait.

Sun Square Mars

You push hard, but much energy is wasted because you tend to lack direction and planning. You often work against the way things are: authorities or the status quo. It may be difficult for you to coordinate your ambitions with your actual actions and feelings. You tend to hobble yourself emotionally. Your drive and passions put you at odds with authority figures time and again. This tendency towards clashes and emotional confrontation does exist, and at these times you can be your own worst enemy.

Sun Opposition Neptune

You find yourself at odds with all that is mystical — the dreamy side of life. Your ambitions are practical and down to earth, and you tend to pooh-pooh all that smacks of the imaginative or ideal. You may have a fear that others (partners, what-have-you) are out to deceive you and want to pull the wool over your eyes. Authorities, especially men, who set themselves up as peacemakers or spiritual gurus are a major pet peeve. Your emphasis on the practical and real may also let you down, resulting in further disillusionment.

Sun Trine Pluto

You find it easy to work with sensitive material, touching upon the more vulnerable areas of the mind or self. You are able to handle these delicate matters without ever breaking stride, for emotional and tender areas of the human psyche don’t phase you. You enjoy getting beneath the surface and have an innate savvy for handling touchy subjects. This is perfect for any research investigation or plain old detective work.

Moon in Virgo

You are concerned and caring when it comes to the welfare of others. Not dynamic or too emotional, you are attentive, observant, careful, and above all responsible — able to respond. Always competent, you are in fact quite loving, although others could feel scrutinized or inadequate when in your presence.

Moon in  8th House

Your keen business sense is never sharper than when you are working with or for others — a group, corporation, and so on. You are great at finding excess and rooting it out, and your actions receive support from those around you. Initiating others.

Moon Sextile Neptune

A born director and orchestrator of the moods and emotions of a group. A sharp sense of drama and a feeling for spiritual ideas and for art in general. Dreamy. Able to understand the public’s mood and what is required to please. Could be deceptive.

Moon Conjunction Pluto

You always manage to bring the searing truth to group situations. Penetrating psychological analyses are your expertise. You may have political influence or handle other people’s money.

Your close ties with home and family, plus your career interest, may cut into your social life and personal charm. Others may find you somewhat preoccupied and lacking in the social graces. You may feel some regret or tension from this situation.

Mercury in Gemini

Yours is a lightning wit. You somehow know everything about everybody. Curious, you love finding things out — speculating, investigating. You are clever but not known for your deep thinking, and any and all kinds of communication satisfy. You are always exploring, testing. Debates, games, and puzzles please you. Quick.

Mercury in 5th House

You can express feelings and put emotions into words. This could give you a flair for the dramatic, public speaking, poetry, and the arts. You are proud of your mind and enjoy using it, solving puzzles — any creative mental outlet.

Mercury Square Saturn

You have much trouble organizing your thoughts, and your lack of discipline is a constant hassle to both you and others. Study and mental self-control are not your cup of tea. You can say things that are simply impractical and have trouble limiting yourself to ideas that are down-to-earth, pragmatic. Some of your ideas are just plain irresponsible. Mental hassles can be a constant headache for you.

Mercury Square Uranus

You may have trouble with any ideas that are new and different. Your more conservative way of thinking and expressing yourself goes against all that is radical and new. Thoughts and concepts that break with tradition may be a hassle for you — a constant headache. You prefer that conversations and communications stay on the accepted paths and become irritated when they stray from what you expect. You have a tendency to lose your temper with little warning.

Venus in Aries

You exhibit great appreciation, intense love, and always wear your heart on your sleeve — always! Not too sensitive with others, you tend to be rough and ready and can sometimes demand a lot of attention. Shy flowers, stand back! You are independent and single-minded, demonstrative and very loving.

Matters of the heart, marriage, and the like are areas where you can help others.

Venus Conjunction Jupiter

You value fairness in all things and go out of your way to be just. You appreciate others who have been successful and may surround yourself with those in power, be they politicians, officials, what-have-you. Your sense of quality  and discrimination may amount to some sort of livelihood for you. You could make your living with your good taste. In addition, you have an innate sense of how to work with and guide others in making decisions. You understand the choices and can spot the right ones.

Mars in Leo

You are always center-stage and entertaining others. You have an almost fierce sense of pride and are very dramatic and expressive, sometimes forceful. You are a natural at sports, games, anything that “gets it out.” Very emotional, you have strong likes and dislikes. You are good with kids, animals — a teacher or coach. You act it out.

Mars in  8th House

Not content with appearances, you are driven to reduce everything to the bare essentials, the nitty-gritty. This compelling urge for integrity and contempt for the superficial may offend some.

You understand and encourage emotions, feelings and creativity and find it easy to work in these areas. You value drive and the ability to get things done. Matters of the heart, marriage, and the like are areas where you can help others.

Mars Opposition Saturn

You have a strong drive, but resist training and discipline. You avoid opportunities to put your energy to work and to learn how to accomplish things. You shirk paying your dues. Your lack of self-discipline brings you in conflict and confrontation with authorities and/or realities. You tend to neglect and ignore responsibilities and put off determining yourself. You can’t seem to get to work.

Mars Square Neptune

You hate a lack of clarity, especially when it comes to your feelings and emotions. This is a less than ideal world as far as you are concerned, and you are for making the best of it. Whatever dreams and ideals you may have had are somehow shut off from the day-to-day realities you face. You would rather ignore your dreams than be tortured by their remoteness. You are suspicious of pie-in-the-sky and have an abnormal fear of being deceived, in particular in matters of love and feelings. A sign of emotional tension.

Mars Trine Ascendant

You come on very strong. You have great confidence and a “take charge” sort of manner. You are a great doer, and others accept your commanding nature. You are a good team player.

Jupiter in Aries

You could pursue a career as a leader or pioneer. You tend to be the one who takes the initiative and are courageous and often fearless to the point of being foolish. Success for you in most things is second nature. Always “walking point,” you tend to be a loner, a warrior. Confident, single-minded, you are sometimes rash but are always direct — straight out.

Jupiter in  3rd House

A born investigator and researcher, always inquiring, searching, following things to their logical conclusion. Your career will probably be built around these qualities of yours — communication, making connections, thoughts and ideas, and so on. You could write a book that would be of great value for people.

Saturn in Aquarius

You have an innate distrust of groups or large organizations and could tend to avoid what is new or future-oriented. You are, perhaps, too conservative and need to develop a sense of community and sharing with others. Learn to be independent. Practice impartiality and altruism. Be innovative.

Saturn in  2nd House

You could be frugal when it comes to possessions, always limiting your purchases to what is essential and has value. This same theme carries through in your response to people. You don’t tend to lavish affection or sentiment. You keep it short and simple.

Saturn Square Neptune

The more disciplined side of you has no time for dreams, visions, and other-worldly stuff. You ignore anything that is not tied down and practical. And yet, all this spiritual stuff has a way of intruding into your real world. You come up against it again and again. You can’t live with it, and you can’t live without it. It seems you feel that dreams and a more “ideal” life must take a back seat to reality and the (sometimes) drudgery of routine. You keep finding yourself looking out the window.

Saturn Trine Midheaven

You enjoy working hard and being organized, and you exercise skill and discipline in anything that affects your career and reputation. A perfect combination for an excellent manager.

Uranus in Virgo

You find new ways to serve others and you have brilliant insights into diet, health, ecology, conservation, and the like. New or alternate life styles and ways to make a living interest you. You are economy personified, always able to salvage and redeem anything. You like to tend and care for people and things. You relax by working.

Uranus in  8th House

Lightning fast when it comes to the business deal, you seem to have direct insight into what is worthwhile and worthless in a situation. You have new and unconventional ways to cut through the red tape and get at what is important.

Neptune in Scorpio

Unafraid of the “dark” side of life, you are interested in esoteric religion, everything mystical or occult, and so on. Sexuality and physical desires are encouraged and seen as spiritual. Money, power, and things of this world are O.K. too. The physical is ideal. Possessions.

Neptune in 10th House

Your practical skills are linked to your almost mystical inner vision. You manifest your ideals and dreams in an organized and clear-headed manner. You would be great at giving the public a sense of the ideal via films, advertising, spiritual work.

Moon Sextile Neptune

A born director and orchestrator of the moods and emotions of a group. A sharp sense of drama and a feeling for spiritual ideas and for art in general. Dreamy. Able to understand the public’s mood and what is required to please. Could be deceptive.

Neptune Sextile Pluto

A searing vision that cuts through what passes for conventional religion. A vision of the endless process of life ever being born afresh. Great acceptance and faith in the natural process and next generation. Love of children and animals.

Pluto in Virgo

You tend to be radical when it comes to self-analysis, which means health care, food, physical wellbeing, and so on. Serving and caring for yourself and others are primary sources of inner growth and changes. You are sensitive to criticism.

Pluto in  8th House

You tear through appearances in an effort to get beneath, behind, and at the heart or essence. You may find the occult, psychology, initiation and mysticism of great interest. Intense personal change and inner growth are lifelong habits.

Moon Conjunction Pluto

You always manage to bring the searing truth to group situations. Penetrating psychological analyses are your expertise. You are perceived as so intense that your  presence in a group has a very decided effect. Others may feel that nothing is a secret from you. You may have political influence or handle other people’s money.

Neptune Sextile Pluto

A searing vision that cuts through what passes for conventional religion. A vision of the endless process of life ever being born afresh. Great acceptance and faith in the natural process and next generation. Love of children and animals.
